Ring box template with insert
A small tray, a slip-on lid and an upside-down insert whose slit holds a ring's band upright. Choose one slit for a single ring, or two for a pair.
Ready-made sizes
Inside sizes from the maker's published size, plus room to slide it in.
Jewelry box (2 1/2 × 1 1/2 in)
2.5 × 1.5 × 0.88 in 63.5 × 38.1 × 22.2 mm
Ring box. From 2 1/2 × 1 1/2 × 7/8 in (a stock ring and earring box)1; room added: none: the stock box's listed size.
How to fold it
Print every page at 100% on cardstock. Leave fit-to-page off, or the slits and folds come out the wrong size.
Cut out the box, the lid and the insert, including the narrow slit or slits in the insert's top.
Score each dashed line against a ruler, then fold the front and back walls up and turn their tabs inward.
Fold the side walls over those tabs and glue them from inside. Build the lid the same way.
Turn the insert upside down and press it into the box, slits facing up, so its open walls stand on the floor.
Stand the ring's band in a slit, then lower the lid over the box.
How the template is drawn
Lid play
The lid's inside is the box's outside plus 0.8 mm (0.03 in) on every side, so it slips on and off without rattling. Settings go from 0 to 3 mm.
Lid depth
40% of the box's height, kept between 8 and 30 mm and never deeper than the box: 15.2 mm (0.6 in) at 2 × 2 × 1.5 in.
Insert height
The insert stands 20.7 mm (0.82 in) inside: 55% of the box's height, less one board thickness. That leaves the lid clear of its top.
Slits
One slit runs across the middle of the insert; two sit a third and two thirds of the way along its depth. Each is 2 mm (0.08 in) wide and 34 mm (1.34 in) long, 70% of the insert's width.
Glue tabs
The box's tab is 15 mm (0.59 in) wide and the insert's is 15 mm (0.59 in). Both sit behind a side wall, so no glue line shows on the outside.
Shape limits
The box is at least 25 mm across and 15 mm tall, with neither side more than 1.8 times the other, and never taller than 1.2 times its larger side. On Letter or A4 the roomiest ring box is still small enough to fit a pocket.
Proposals, pairs and keepsakes
A ring box suits a proposal, a wedding band or a pair of earrings laid side by side in two slits. Cover the insert's top with velvet or felt cut to the same size, then cut the slit through the fabric with the same blade so the band still stands straight.
For a keepsake that gets opened often, a sliding drawer box slides out like a matchbox, and a heart box carries a gift in a softer shape. For a larger gift that holds a ring box as one of several items, a box with lid gives the roomier base, and a mailer box keeps its lid hinged and shut in the post.
