How to fold it

    Box with lid template

Two trays: the base, and a slightly bigger, shallower lid that slips over it. Choose “Tray only” for an open tray.

    Ready-made sizes

Inside sizes from the maker's published size, plus room to slide it in.

    How to fold it

    1. Print at 100%. The base and the lid share one sheet, side by side.

    2. Cut out both pieces and crease every dashed line.

    3. On the base, fold the front and back walls up and turn their grey tabs inward.

    4. Fold the side walls up over the tabs and glue them from inside. Hold each corner square for a minute.

    5. Build the lid the same way. It is drawn to slip over the base, not to fit inside it.

    6. If the lid feels tight, the card is thicker than the paper you chose: switch regular paper to cardstock and print again.

    How the template is drawn

The box with lid template at 4 × 4 × 2 in, flatBaseFrontBackSideSideLid topLidLid
The template at 4 × 4 × 2 in: solid lines are cut, dashed lines are folded, grey tabs are glued.
    • Play in the lid

The lid's inside is the base's outside plus 0.8 mm (0.03 in) on every side, so it slides on and off without sticking or rattling.

    • Lid depth

35% of the box's height, kept between 10 and 40 mm and never deeper than the box: 17.8 mm (0.7 in) at 4 × 4 × 2 in.

    • Hidden tabs

The glue tabs sit on the front and back walls and fold behind the side walls, so no tab edge shows outside. Each is 15 mm (0.59 in) wide, under half the depth, so the two on one side never overlap.

    • Inside size

Width, depth and height are inside the base. The board thickness is added to every wall, and to the lid twice over (once for the base's wall it covers).

    • Two pieces, one sheet

The largest box with a lid is worked out with both trays on the sheet, so the lid always prints beside its base and nothing needs taping.

    Trays, gift boxes and drawers

“Tray only” keeps the base and drops the lid: a desk tray, a seed tray, a drawer insert, or the inner tray of a two-part gift box. For a box that closes on its own with no second piece, try a tuck end box or a mailer box with its hinged lid.

For a lid that covers the whole height, set the height of a second box with lid to match and use its base upside down. Gifts that need a handle travel better in a gable box, and a pyramid box makes a pointed lid-free favor.
