How to fold it

    Mailer box template

The shipping box with a hinged lid: the side walls roll over and lock into the floor, and the lid tucks in at the front. No glue.

    Ready-made sizes

Inside sizes from the maker's published size, plus room to slide it in.

    How to fold it

    1. Print at 100%, on the biggest sheet your printer takes: a mailer opens out wide, so A3 or Tabloid makes a roomier one.

    2. Cut the outline and the narrow slots on the floor's two side creases.

    3. Crease every dashed line.

    4. Fold the front and back walls up and turn their four ears inward.

    5. Fold each side wall up over the ears, roll its inner layer over the top and down inside, and push its two lock tabs into the slots.

    6. Close the lid: its side flaps go inside the side walls and the front flap tucks behind the front wall.

    How the template is drawn

    The mailer box template at 6 × 4 × 2 in, flatFloorFrontBackSideSideInnerInnerLidTuck
The template at 6 × 4 × 2 in: solid lines are cut, dashed lines are folded, grey tabs are glued.
    • Double side walls

The floor is three board thicknesses wider than the inside width: half a thickness for each outer wall and a full one for each inner wall (0.8 mm (0.03 in) at 0.25 mm board).

    • Inner wall

The rolled inner layer is a board thickness and half a millimeter shorter than the outer wall, so it reaches the floor without buckling.

    • Lock tabs and slots

Two lock tabs per side, 20 mm (0.79 in) wide, pass through slots cut on the floor's crease. The slots are 1 mm (0.04 in) across: twice the board plus half a millimeter.

    • Front tuck

38.3 mm (1.51 in) deep at 6 × 4 × 2 in: three quarters of the height, and narrower than the lid by twice the board plus 0.8 mm on each side so it clears the double walls.

    • Ears

The ears on the front and back walls are 40 mm (1.57 in) long and stop short of the roll crease, so the inner wall folds down over them and holds them.

    Shipping and subscription boxes

Printed on heavy card or chipboard, a mailer makes a sturdy gift or subscription box. Real shipping boxes are corrugated board; for that, cut the SVG on a laser or a cutting machine and set the board thickness to match.

Smaller things ship well in a tuck end box inside a padded envelope. A box with lid opens more grandly for gifts; a pillow box or gable box suits favors that are handed over, not mailed.
