How to fold it

    Tuck end box template

The everyday retail carton: four walls, a glue tab, and a lid at each end that tucks in. Pick the sheet and see the biggest one it holds.

    Ready-made sizes

Inside sizes from the maker's published size, plus room to slide it in.

    How to fold it

    1. Print at 100% on cardstock, then measure one side with a ruler: it should match the size on screen.

    2. Cut along the solid lines. Keep the short shoulder cuts beside each tuck flap: they let the flap slide past the walls.

    3. Crease every dashed line against a ruler with a dry ballpoint or a bone folder, then fold each one once.

    4. Fold the four walls into a tube and glue the grey tab to the inside of the far side wall. Press until it holds.

    5. Close the bottom: fold in the two dust flaps, then the lid, and slide its tuck flap down inside the wall.

    6. Put in what it holds, then close the top the same way.

    How the template is drawn

The tuck end box template at 2 × 1.5 × 4 in, flatFrontSideSideBackLidTuckLidTuck
The template at 2 × 1.5 × 4 in: solid lines are cut, dashed lines are folded, grey tabs are glued.
    • Inside size stays true

Each wall is drawn one board thickness wider than the inside size you type, half on each side of its crease. Cardstock adds 0.25 mm per wall, regular paper 0.1 mm.

    • Tuck flap depth

60% of the depth, kept between 8 and 30 mm and never more than half the height. At 2 × 1.5 × 4 in that is 23 mm (0.91 in).

    • Tuck flap clearance

The flap is 0.8 mm (0.03 in) narrower than its lid on each side, with rounded corners, so it slides between the side walls instead of catching on them.

    • Dust flaps

They reach 19.2 mm (0.75 in) under the lid, always less than 45% of the width, so the two flaps from opposite walls never meet in the middle.

    • Glue tab

15 mm (0.59 in) wide: at most 15 mm and never more than 80% of the depth, so it fits flat on the side wall. Its ends taper so it stays clear of the dust flap creases.

    Reverse or straight tuck

With a reverse tuck the top lid hinges on the back wall and the bottom lid on the front wall, so the two tuck flaps go in from opposite sides. With a straight tuck both lids hinge on the back wall and both tuck in behind the front, so the two ends look alike. Both hold the same inside size; switch with the “Ends” keys and the drawing changes.

For something heavy, choose a thicker board so the tube does not bow. A box that opens on its long side is usually better as a mailer box or a box with a lid; small square gifts suit a cube net, and party favors a pillow box.
