How to fold it

    Envelope template

Type the size of your card, or pick A2 or A7: the envelope is drawn around it with room to slide it in, four flaps and a flap to seal.

    Ready-made sizes

Inside sizes from the maker's published size, plus room to slide it in.

    How to fold it

    1. Print at 100%. An envelope for an A2 card fits on Letter or A4; one for a 5 × 7 in A7 card needs A3 or Tabloid.

    2. Cut the outline: a rectangle with a flap on each side.

    3. Crease the four sides of the rectangle; on regular paper a firm fold with a fingernail is enough.

    4. Fold the two side flaps in.

    5. Fold the bottom flap up over them and glue it only along its two slanted edges, where it lies on the side flaps.

    6. Slip the card in, fold the top flap down and seal it with a glue stick, double-sided tape or a sticker.

    How the template is drawn

    • Room round the card

The pocket is the card plus 3.2 mm (0.13 in) on every side (1/8 in; 1 to 6 mm under Settings). For a 5 × 7 in card that is 7.25 in (184.1 mm) by 5.25 in (133.4 mm): the standard A7 envelope.

    • Opens on the long edge

Card width is the edge along the opening, as with A2 and A7 envelopes. For an envelope that opens on the short edge, type the card's sizes the other way round.

    • Side flaps

31.3 mm (1.23 in) deep, about a sixth of the width, and cut narrower toward the top so the top flap lies flat over them.

    • Bottom flap

It reaches 73.5 mm (2.89 in) up, 55% of the height, and its slanted edges overlap both side flaps: glue goes only there, never where the card slides.

    • Seal

The top flap overlaps the bottom flap by 10.7 mm (0.42 in): at least 10 mm, or 8% of the height on a big envelope, so a strip of glue or a sticker holds it shut.

    Cards, invitations and gift money

Make the envelope from the same paper as an invitation, or from patterned paper with the lines printed on the inside so the outside stays clean. A plain card of any odd size, a photo print or a folded letter gets an envelope that fits it instead of one that rattles.

For a gift card that should feel like a present, the pillow box is a step up; a small gift travels in a tuck end box or a cube, and a mailer box is for things that go in the post.
