Cupcake box maker
Cupcake box template with insert
A box, a slip-on lid and an insert with a hole for each cupcake, so they travel upright. Choose 1, 2, 4 or 6 cupcakes and the room each one gets.
Ready-made sizes
Inside sizes from the maker's published size, plus room to slide it in.
Frosted cupcake
3.25 × 3 in 82.6 × 76.2 mm
Cupcake box. From 2 in across the base, 1 1/4 in tall (a standard baking cup)1; room added: a 3.25 in square and 3 in of height for a frosted top; the insert's hole is the cup's base plus 3 mm.
How to fold it
Print at 100% on cardstock. When the three pieces do not fit one sheet together, the PDF puts the box, the lid and the insert on a sheet each.
Cut out the box, the lid and the insert, including the round holes: a craft knife in short strokes, or a 2 1/8 in circle punch.
Crease every dashed line. Fold the box's front and back walls up, turn their tabs in and glue the side walls over them. Build the lid the same way.
Fold the insert's two legs down and stand it in the box: the legs rest on the floor and keep the holes 12 mm up.
Lower each cupcake into a hole; the paper liner's flare holds it upright.
Turn the lid over and lower it on. Carry the box flat, with both hands under it.
How the template is drawn
Holes for standard liners
A standard baking cup is 2 in (50.8 mm) across its base; each hole is 53.8 mm (2.12 in), 3 mm more, so the cup drops in and its flared sides catch on the rim.
Room per cupcake
You choose the square each cupcake gets (62 mm at least: the hole and a margin round it) and the height. At 3 × 3 in a box for one is 3 in (76.2 mm) square inside; for 4 it is twice that each way, for 6 three cupcakes by two.
Insert height
The insert's legs are 12 mm (0.47 in) long (at most 40% of the height), so the holes grip each cup about a third of the way up its 1 1/4 in side. The insert stands 1 mm clear of every wall.
Lid
The lid slips over the box with 0.8 mm (0.03 in) of play a side (0 to 3 mm under Settings) and covers the top 26.7 mm (1.05 in) of the walls. The box is at least 0.8 of the room per cupcake tall, for a frosted top.
Several sheets
The box, the lid and the insert share one sheet when they fit; for a bigger box each gets a sheet of its own, and the tool says how many. One or two cupcakes print on Letter or A4; a box for four or six needs A3 or Tabloid, and the tool switches to it.
Bake sales, birthdays and single gifts
A single cupcake in its own box makes a party favor or a thank-you; four or six travel to a bake sale without touching. Print the lid in colour and the box plain, or put a name on the lid with the label.
For a slice of cake or a pastry carried by hand, use the gable box. A box with lid without an insert holds cookies, and a popcorn box or a treat cone holds sweets.
